North America's first panel-less retort bottle was introduced by packaging giant Sonoco, Hartsville, S.C. The six-layer PP bottle with 38-mm neck offers oxygen barrier and stands up to retort sterilization without the internal panels or ribs found in typical retort bottles. What's more, the bottle's curved rather than dimpled shape eliminates wrinkled shrink-sleeve labels. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to design the bottle to withstand the pressure and vacuum of retort filling. The first commercial application is an 11-oz ready-to-drink coffee bottle from Kanpak, Arkansas City, Kan. Sonoco is also working on 8-oz bottles for shelf-stable, dairy-based beverages and foods.
