A reinforced pipe technology called HexelOne, developed by Solvay SA in Belgium, was sold last summer to Egeplast Werner Strumann GmbH, a producer of PE pipe in Greven, Germany. Solvay's technology targets large-diameter (180 to 1000 mm) pipe for water and gas distribution to contain pressures of 25 bar and higher. Solvay's technology reinforces PE pipe with layers of MD-oriented PE tape wrapped in a criss-cross pattern around the pipe and protected by an unoriented plastic layer. Wrapping plastic pipe with oriented tape made of the same type of plastic allows both downgauging and easier recycling of scrap compared with typical composite pipes wound with aluminum tape or glass fibers.
