Availability of three new forms of high-performance PEEK resins has been announced by two suppliers. •Two types of PEEK have achieved ISO 10993 biocompatibility compliance for use in limited-exposure medical devices and instruments. Both KetaSpire PEEK and AvaSpire modified PEEK from Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, Alpharetta, Ga., are now options for healthcare applications such as orthopedics, medical devices, surgical and dental instruments, and drug-delivery systems. •Stock shapes of Solvay’s KetaSpire PEEK and AvaSpire modified PEEK are now available in stock shapes from Piper Plastics Inc., Chandler, Ariz. It uses a proprietary process to mold 6 x 12 in. plaques 0.5 or 1 in. thick. Piper also makes plaques of Solvay’s PrimoSpire SRP (self-reinforced polyphylene), described as “the world’s stiffest and strongest unreinforced polymer.” •EOS North America, Novi, Mich., worked with Victrex USA Inc., W. Conshohocken, Pa., to develop a PEEK material for use in EOS’s laser-sintering machines for rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing (see p. 35).
