Pepsi-Cola North America, Purchase, N.Y., has lightweighted its flavored non-carbonated 500-cc PET bottles by more than 20%. The weight of iced-tea and fruit-drink bottles was cut from 23.5 g to 18.6 g through structural bottle design, according to the company. The lightweighting will reportedly eliminate about 20 million lb/yr of plastic waste. The bottle ranks as one of the lightest for flavored, non-carbonated beverages. Using finite-element modeling, weight was reduced throughout the bottle without sacrificing strength, Pepsi says. In addition, there is a 10% reduction in the label size and a 5% reduction in shrink film to wrap the multi-packs. (914) 253-2000 • www.pepsi.com
