WEB EXCLUSIVE: At last month’s Drinktec exhibition in Munich, Germany, Sidel of France introduced new technologies and services to produce more PET bottles faster with less energy consumption. Sidel (U.S. office in Norcross, Ga.) launched the SBO Universal2 line of reheat stretch-blow molders, which raise bottle output 10% over the previous SBO Universal series to a “record speed” of 2000 bottles/hr per mold. This applies to all models up to the SBO 24 XS. Sidel guarantees yields of 97%. What’s more, new lamps and oven modifications reportedly cut energy consumption by up to 10%. Sidel also says that use of more robust components and fewer replacement parts trims unplanned machine downtime to less than 3%.
At the show, Sidel demonstrated molding 1.5L mineral-water bottles containing 50% recycled PET at 2000/hr/mold on an SBO 14. The elevated recycle content resulted from a joint development with Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., Bolton, Ont. (see Keeping Up with Injection Molding).
Sidel is also offering a new module for its Efficiency Improvement Tool (EIT) productivity data-acquisition system, called Eco EIT. This module records data on energy consumption (electricity, compressed air, water, natural gas) for a machine, production cell, or entire plant. ECO EIT generates detailed consumption reports including costs of energy resources used, which can be exported to ERP systems.
Also new is a service called ECO Booster, in which a company technician performs an audit of plant electrical consumption, air pressure, air and water quality, leaks, etc., and then proposes equipment modifications, process controls, maintenance procedures, and other corrective actions to achieve energy and cost savings. The program continues with on-going energy monitoring.
Sidel also announced news relating to its Predis dry decontamination technology, which involves spraying hydrogen peroxide vapor on the interior of PET preforms to extend product shelf life. Until now, Predis was sold only with new SBO Universal blow molders and Combi blowing/filling/capping systems. Now, Predis is available for retrofit to existing equipment. The compact system fits between the preform feeder and the oven infeed.
Since this past summer. Predis is being used for the first time to make 1L PET bottles for UHT milk. The first user is LSDH of France. Predis reportedly enabled LSDH to trim bottle weight by 20% (since it does not involve reheating finished bottles) and to achieve large savings in water and chemicals for decontamination.
