A color system developed specifically for PET and initially offered only as minibeads is newly available in three alternative forms. PETek color concentrates from Teknor Color Co., Pawtucket, R.I., was launched two years ago as minibeads of 0.038 or 0.050 in. diam. Now, standard-size beads and pellets are offered with the same proprietary carrier resin, as well as traditional beads or pellets based on a standard PET resin carrier. All three new products come in 0.070- or 0.110-in. sizes. As with minibeads, all three new forms reportedly provide superior clarity and color uniformity vs. conventional PET color concentrates and can be used for film, sheet, bottles, and other molded products. The four versions are said to differ little in cost. The large beads are said to melt later in the barrel and thus avoid screw slippage. A "modified" series of large beads utilize a special version of the proprietary carrier and can be used at very high loadings where a high degree of opacity is desirable. The "traditional" concentrates are recommended for prevention of premature melting, particularly when there is little or no cooling at the throat of the processing machine.
