Significant improvements in clarity and purity are claimed for a new generation of PET bottle resins that will be commercialized in the first quarter of 2007 by the Voridian Div. of Eastman Chemical Co., Kingsport, Tenn. Its ParaStar PET reportedly makes bottles with unprecedented clarity and improved consistency. Also claimed is at least 25% lower acetaldehyde levels, which makes the resin particularly attractive for bottled water. (Eastman is not releasing any technical data on these resins for publication.) ParaStar PET reportedly requires no equipment or process changes. It is produced with Eastman's IntegRx process, which is said to cut costs of energy, labor, and equipment. A key feature is eliminating the solid-stating process, which alone cuts manufacturing costs by 15%.
