A new PET preform mold that reportedly improves quality and lowers cycle time comes from MHT America, Inc., Woodbridge, Va. The new High-Performance Stack (HP-Stack) tool, announced at the K 2007 show, is undergoing production trials. (It is not a stack mold-the term "stack" merely indicates that the cavity is built up, or stacked, from components such as the thread finish, neck ring, and gate insert.) Special cooling is said to provide uniform temperature distribution and maintain low mold temperature in fast-cycle operation. New neck-ring and cavity designs reportedly prevent thread sinks, flat support-ledge defects, and parting-line deformation. A new gate design provides focused cooling while eliminating heat losses from the nozzle, resulting in significant water-flow reduction to the gate insert and consequent energy savings. When combined with MHT's CoolMax post-mold cooling system, productivity is improved up to 30%, MHT says. (703) 897-5260 . www.mhtamerica.com

Editor PickBlock Cavities and Keep Molding
It goes against conventional wisdom, but molding with blocked cavities can be done while maintaining quality with the help of appropriate in-cavity sensors and process-control software.
