Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik GmbH in Germany has built the fi rst example of a new multi-stage extruder to make premium APET sheet without predrying. The system combines a single-screw extruder with a six- or eight-spindle planetary degassing section under extremely high vacuum (5 mbar), followed by another short single-screw extruder to build pressure and a melt pump to meter resin to the die. The system is designed to process recycled PET bottle scrap into premium sheet by compensating for variations in melt viscosity. BEX, represented here by American Maplan in McPherson, Kan., offers three sizes: 90 mm for 660 to 880 lb/hr, 120 mm for 1300 lb/hr, and 150 mm for up to 2000 lb/hr. The planetary degassing section uses the same venting concept as the 12-screw ring extruder from Extricom GmbH (formerly Blach), used in higher volume RPET systems built by Buhler AG in Switzerland.
