Metallocene-based polyolefin elastomers (POEs) have achieved success as rubber modifiers in TPO compounds. Less well known are applications where POEs are used on their own as TPEs. In one recent example, a blend of two grades of Engage POEs from DuPont Dow Elastomers, Wilmington, Del., was chosen over mineral-filled flexible PVC for the wheel wear surfaces of the first “all-terrain” roller skates. Skorpion Extreme Quad Skates from New Zealand’s Skorpion Sports Ltd. use the POE blend to provide the desired balance of softness and toughness while reducing the weight of the wear surface by 40%, or 7.75 oz per skate. The POE is overmolded on the one-piece polyethylene wheel. “The Engage was easier to mold, with better adhesion to the polyethylene wheel rim, and we achieved a superior, glossier finish,” says Skorpion product marketing specialist, Gary Reid.
