Solvay Advanced Polymers, LLC, Alpharetta, Ga., has a pair of new injection moldable Torlon polyamide-imide (PAI) compounds said to provide significantly better wear resistance than previous grades. Torlon 4630 and 4645 are aimed at bushings, bearings, sliding elements, thrust washers, and needle bearings for automotive, aerospace, and other high-performance applications.

Torlon 4630 is graphite and PTFE filled for non-lubricated environments. It boasts a 50% wear-factor improvement over previous grades for both high-pressure/low-speed and low-pressure/high-speed applications. Its limiting PV is 150,000 psi x fpm and its CLTE is 40% lower than previous products.

Torlon 4645 is a carbon fiber/PTFE compound for high-pressure/low-speed use in lubricated environments. It provides 100% wear-factor improvement over previous Torlon grades. Limiting PV is 750,000 psi x fpm. It also has a low friction coefficient of 0.05 to 0.1 and low CLTE of 3 ppm/°F for tight-tolerance molding.
