A new five-layer PP/EVOH/PP sheet is said to offer far lower haze than is typical even for clarified PP, plus high barrier, which usually adds to haze. The sheet is aimed at thermoformed food containers with extended shelf life. Sonoco’s Rigid Plastics Group in Hartsville, S.C., developed its XCHB Series PP barrier sheet for in-house thermoforming and external sale for form-fill-seal applications. The sheet reportedly has less than 4% haze after thermoforming, vs. 10% to 12% haze for typical clarified-PP formed containers. Clarity is a result of resin blending, tight extrusion temperature control, and a special plug-assist material and surface finish, Sonoco says. The sheet can be up to 34 in. wide and 100 mils thick with barrier layers of nylon or EVOH from 5% to 25% of the structure. Tel: (800) 576-6626 • www.sonoco.com
