WEB EXCLUSIVE — Two new high-performance PP resins, one for multilayer food packaging, the other for transparent cast film applications such as retortable pouches, are available from LyondellBasell Industries (formerly Basell), Wilmington, Del. Adstif HA740J is a nucleated, high-crystallinity hompolymer (3.0 MFR) for sheet extrusion and thermoforming. It boasts improved processing, high transparency, and high stiffness without loss of impact resistance. It appears particularly attractive for multilayer barrier food packaging. It potentially allows thermoformers to incorporate higher regrind levels into clear PP applications without compromising transparency, the supplier says. In its trials, PP sheet containing EVOH and tie layers showed no visible signs of degradation or yellowing after numerous reprocessing cycles. Moreover, its outstanding formability is said to provide better thickness distribution in thin-wall packaging. Good dimensional stability in thin gauges after sterilization, hot-filling, or microwave reheating are also claimed. Moplen EP310K is a medium-flow heterophasic copolymer for cast film in retortable pouches, laminations, and low-blush stationery applications. Containing no slip or antiblock, it can be used in food contact. It also is said to deliver good stiffness plus deep-freeze impact resistance, as well as high heat resistance, which results in packaging that can withstand refrigerator-to-microwave use. It also boasts good sealing properties. (800) 955-3223 * www.basell.com
