A new electrically conductive PPO/nylon blend from SABIC Innovative Plastics, Pittsfield, Mass., offers 25% lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thus permits enhanced gap management for automotive body panels. The material is designed for on-line electrostatic painting and delivers a Class A finish. CTE is reduced from 9 to 7 without a loss in impact resistance or stiffness, according to SABIC. Noryl GTX 977 reportedly helps alleviate a common problem in vertical panels such as fenders and tailgate skins by allowing better dimensional tolerances, smaller gaps between panels, and improved “flushness” in hot weather or bright sunlight.
