An unusual series of polyurethanes that simulate the processing and performance characteristic of thermoplastics now includes mercury-free grades that also offer enhanced green strength and extended pot life. Three new grades from Innovative Polymers, Inc., St. Johns, Mich., gel in 7 to 15 min and demold in under 7 hr at room temperature. Company president Michael Molitor says, “These polyurethanes provide an unprecedented ability to hand pour or vacuum cast prototypes that attain rapid green strength and once cured, perform like injection molded thermoplastic parts.” Target applications include equipment housings, auto interior and under-hood parts, medical-devices, electronic components, waterclear lenses, and pillow optics. •TP-4014 is a tough, amber, low-viscosity polyurea that meets UL 94V-0 and simulates a flame-retardant TPO (photo shows a bumper fascia). It has a gel time of 12.5 to 15 min, and demold time of 1 hr at 150 F. Once cured, the system has a flex modulus of 150,000 psi, notched Izod impact strength of 3 ft-lb/in., and HDT of 192 F. •VA-259 is a rigid, 85 Shore D PUR that simulates FR-ABS (94V-0). It gels in 7 min and demolds in under 3.5 hr. It has tensile strength of 7000 psi, elongation of 11%, flex modulus of 330,000 psi, and HDT of 186 F. •VA-274 is a rigid, water-clear PUR that resembles acrylic. It has an 18- to 21-min gel time, demold time of 6 to 8 hr, tensile strength of 9800 psi, flex modulus of 365,000 psi, notched Izod impact of 1 ft-lb/in., and HDT of 158 F.
