Use of polyurethane resin is being pioneered for RTM and its vacuum-assisted variation (VARTM) by BaySystems, a Bayer MaterialScience company, Pittsburgh, as an alternative to unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, or epoxy. A major advantage of PUR is that it reportedly offers greater strength and stiffness than polyesters while eliminating styrene fumes and peroxide catalysts that require refrigeration. According to BaySystems, the superior toughness of PUR composites has opened up RTM and VARTM to new markets in ballistics and sporting goods. (412) 777-7454 • bayer-baysystems.com
