A novel polyol is designed to produce high-support, high-resilience (HS-HR) flexible PUR slabstock for premium furniture and mattresses. Ultracel U3000 from Bayer MaterialScience, Pittsburgh, is a stable, 10%-SAN-solids dispersion in a HMW polyether polyol. It is said to produce very stable yet shrink-resistant foam that is easy to crush. It can be processed over a wide range of water levels and isocyanate indexes and with varying amounts of high-solids polymer polyols, such as Bayer’s Arcol HS-100 or Hyperlite E-850. Foam incorporating Ultracel U3000 reportedly can be manufactured cost-effectively at a wide range of firmness levels. The foams are said to maintain firmness better than standard foams at equivalent densities and to rebound more quickly after short-term compression. Foams made with this polyol achieve a support factor of 2.5, an appreciable improvement over the 2.0 factor for most better-quality conventional foams.
