Reprocess Barrier Film Scrap into Sheet

From: Plastics Technology
Issue: February 2007

In tests late last year, a 0.75-in. single-screw lab extruder from Randcastle Extrusion Systems Inc., Cedar Grove, N.J., reprocessed five-layer PP/EVOH barrier film into 30-mil monolayer sheet, in which the EVOH was dispersed into sub-micron-size domains in the PP matrix.

The 24:1 L/D screw used only two of Randcastle's Recirculator mixing sections to blend these incompatible materials, which would typically require more mixing sections and greater processing length. The customer intends to make two-layer coex sheet out of 60/40 PP and fivelayer barrier scrap. Tel: (973) 239-1150 . www.randcastle.com
