A dynamic mechanical analyzer designed for polyolefins reportedly uses advanced software to gather a wider range of rheological data more easily and quickly than previous systems. The VTM series of analyzers from Dynisco Instruments, Franklin, Mass., is said to be robust enough for use on the production floor and to cost less than competitive units. They measure properties in a pressurized sample chamber instead of a more conventional open cavity. This is said to reduce edge effects and potential contamination and to improve repeatability. These instruments can gather standard data points such as dynamic viscosity, elastic modulus, viscous modulus, and tangent delta. With the company’s Enterprise software package, users reportedly can create their own testing protocols, select multiple data points to be gathered from a single sample, and compare historical data. Large Angle Oscillatory Shear (LAOS) allows the VTM units to measure long-chain branching in just 10 to 12 minutes instead of several hours with standard test methods. When measuring very low viscosities, the unit’s Enhanced Dynamic Range is said to improve the signal-to-noise-ratio to improve test sensitivity.
