At October’s K 2013 show in Dusseldorf, Persico Rotomolding Div. of Nembro (Bergamo), Italy, discussed the latest developments in its Smart-Leonardo rotomolding machines. These include a quick-change system, whereby the spider with mold attached can be interchanged in 3-4 minutes, thanks to quick couplings for electrical and air lines and an automatic locking system. An “intelligent spider recognition system” loads the proper molding recipe in the controller when the spider is engaged.

Smart-Leonardo is an all-electric rotomolding system said to be especially simple, compact, and energy efficient. It uses electrical heating elements on the mold surface and cooling fans built into the mold carriage, which rotate along with the mold. Molds (also built by Persico) have up to 16 heating zones, each controlled by its own mold sensor, as well as two internal air-temperature sensors.

Persico established Persico USA in Rochester Hills, Mich., last September, when it acquired Autoplas Systems Ltd., a producer of automated assembly systems for automotive. Persico USA will continue to manufacture those products and will also launch a rotational mold refurbishment and modification service, as well as after-sales service for owners of Persico rotomolding machines. In the near future, Persico USA plans to manufacture molds as well.
