What hot runners are to thermoplastics, cold runners are to thermosets like liquid silicone rubber (LSR). Two cold-runner systems for LSR were introduced at this year's NPE show in Chicago. ALBA Enterprises Inc., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., showed the CRS cold-runner system for thermoset LSR and EPDM elastomers. The standard system features the Quattro pneumatic shutoff nozzles and chokes, a valve-gate system that imparts minimum mechanical shear and withstands high curing temperatures without crosslinking resin in the gate area. D-M-E Co., Madison Heights, Mich., offers a standardized cold-runner system for LSR or other thermoset rubbers. Its KKS system has pneumatic needle shutoff and restrictors that minimize leftover sprue volume. A standard system can have two to 16 drops with seven nozzle styles.
