A sheet extruder of recycled PET eliminated the need to pelletize its scrap before reuse by equipping a line with a self-cleaning screen changer and gear pump supplied by Maag Pump Systems, Charlotte, N.C. Maag’s screen changer reportedly has four times the filter area of conventional hydraulic slide-plate models of comparable size. The extra surface area allows processing of heavily contaminated materials. The gear pump compensates for flow changes during screen cleaning and changing to provide uniform flow to the die.
The Maag equipment was used by FDS Manufacturing, Pomona, Calif., on a 6-in. Cincinnati Milacron extruder. FDS produces sheet containing up to 80% PET regrind at rates up to 4000 lb/hr, and feeds regrind flake right into the hopper. By not repelletizing the scrap, the processor reportedly saved about 5¢/lb and eliminated a heat history.
