A new octene LLDPE for rigid thin-wall injection molded lids and closures used in food packaging is said to provide better seals, keeping products such as ice cream and coffee fresh longer. Developed by Nova Chemicals, Pittsburgh, Surpass Ifs932-R is the latest addition to the line of PE resins produced with non-metallocene, single-site catalysts and the dual-reactor Advanced Sclairtech process. The 150-MI, 0.932-g/cc resin is said to combine exceptional processability with an excellent balance of stiffness and toughness for improved crack resistance and downgauging capability. Low shrinkage, excellent clarity, and superior organoleptic properties are also claimed. It has a tensile modulus of 61,500 psi, tensile strength of 1770 psi, elongation of 12%, and 97% clarity. Instrumented impact values at maximum load are 99 lb at 23 C and 144 lb at -20 C. Instrumented impact energy values at 23 C and -20 C are 3.3 ft-lb and 5.1 ft-lb, respectively.
