CONTROLS & DRIVES: Slew of Control Packages For All Processors

Five products debut at NPE.

Atlanta-based Siemens presented a wide range of new control solutions for plastics processors at NPE2015. Among them:

 •  Industrial Ethernet Connectivity: Whether developing a Greenfield project with new and existing production equipment, adding stations to an extrusion line, or expanding a brownfield installation for improved plant communications—regardless of the control brands onboard—the Siemens Sinamics drive platform (photo, top) can link all data devices and quickly expand a network. Whether the plant runs Profinet, Profibus, or Ethernet as its main bus, all machines and materials-handling devices can now be connected. This reduces total cost of ownership and eliminates the need to match the existing drive network.

 •  Automation Solutions for Extruders: Through a single PLC, extrusion processors can achieve total control of all temperature zone inputs and operator interfaces via the Siemens EXT3370 software package. The package is a scalable, pre-engineered solution for automation of up to 256 zones, with a standard operator interface, advanced PLC-based PID control loops with fast auto-tuning and in-process tuning, decentralized I/O, and closed-loop temperature control for an entire extrusion or blow molding operation.

•  Totally Integrated Operations: Siemens’ Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) concept ensures efficient interoperability of all automation components. The TIA Portal provides an engineering framework for implementing automation solutions in plastics processing. From designing, commissioning, operating, and maintaining to upgrading automation systems, the TIA portal saves engineering time, cost and effort.

 •  Energy-Efficient Servo-Pump Technology: Traditional hydraulics use pumps that run constantly and waste energy. Servomotor replacements for existing pump motors can vary the speed with the demand, or even stop altogether, saving considerable energy. At NPE2015, Siemens presented its new Sinamics servo pump (photo, bottom), which delivers hydraulic oil as needed through its closed-loop pressure system.

 •  Motion Control Systems for Processing Machinery: For blow molding, Siemens displayed a parison-control package that provides machine builders and processors with 256 points for linear interpolation, saving considerable programming, setup, and integration time. For injection presses, all speeds, pressures, and up to 24 temperature zones can run on a single Siemens PLC.
