Sartomer Co., Exton, Pa., says it has discovered a new use for its SMA 1000 low-molecular-weight styrene maleic anhydride oligomer. When added to PBT it reportedly can increase flow to facilitate injection molding with thinner walls, longer and more intricate flow paths, and/or fewer gates. What’s more, SMA reportedly does not reduce PBT’s crystallinity or hurt its dimensional or chemical stability. SMA does increase PBT’s glass-transition temperature (Tg) and HDT, but mechanical properties are similar to those of standard PBT, Sartomer reports. 800-SARTOMER • www.sartomer.com
