Advanced Polymers Inc., Salem, N.H., is used to making the smallest heat-shrink tubing in the world. Advanced Poly typically drops its smallest tube ID by around 0.001 in. every year. Late last year the firm produced its latest and smallest. It’s medical-grade PET with an initial ID before shrinking of 0.006 in. and 0.00025-in. wall thickness. Previously, Advanced Poly’s smallest PET heat-shrink tube had an ID of 0.007 in. The primary application is micro catheters where the PET tube provides insulation over an optical fiber or electrical wire and consolidates the wire with a micro device like a coil that may be attached to it.
