Solvay Engineered Polymers (now known as LyondellBasell Advanced Polyolefins), Auburn Hills, Mich., has developed one of the first thermoformable laminates for soft-touch auto and marine interior skins that is recyclable. The developmental Respondex system has a 0.150-in. TPV top layer, 0.100-in. crosslinked PP foam center, and 0.15-in. TPO substrate. The all-olefin system is melt bonded without adhesive, and regrind can be cycled back into the substrate layer. There is no commercial source yet of this system, but a two-layer laminate of Solvay's Respond EX 4290 TPV backed with PP foam is made by Voltek LLC, Coldwater, Mich. Solvay recommends its Sequel E3000 TPO for the substrate.
