WEB EXCLUSIVE: Working in close cooperation with the dishwasher department of BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgerate GmbH in Dillingen, Germany, Bayer MaterialScience developed a special flame-retardant PC/ABS with extraordinary resistance to hot, humid environments. New Bayblend FR 3008 HR (hydrolysis resistant) is used to protect the sensitive electronic parts for the latest generation of dishwashers from BSH. Aging experiments were conducted to simulate the life cycle of a dishwasher. After 60 days in a water bath at 80 C in constant contact with steam, Bayer says the resin retains necessary mechanical properties—tensile yield strength, for instance, is virtually unchanged—while such extreme conditions completely destroy test pieces of other FR-PC/ABS grades used in TV sets and IT equipment. Bayer (U.S. office in Pittsburgh) also says that mechanical load testing with and without inmpact stress over a period of 18 to 24 months produced a UL 746 B relative thermal index (RTI) of 80 to 85 C for wall thicknesses of 1.55 mm or greater. UL 94V-0 rating at 1.5 mm was obtained even after 5000 hr at such temperatures. The resin also passed two glow-wire tests—GWFI of at least 850 C and GWIT of 775 C. It also boasts a CTI >250V and electrical insulation value of 31 kV/mm.
