A new precious-metal sputtered coating on PET film from Techni-Met Inc., Windsor, Conn., has extremely high oxygen and moisture barriers. VML-B03 film has moisture barrier of 0.03 g/m2-day at 100 F and 100% humidity, plus oxygen barrier of 0.23 cc/m2-day at 73 F and 100% humidity. It was developed by Techni-Met as a clear film for electronic displays. The barrier coating is acrylate and aluminum oxide, sputtered onto 3- to 7.5-mil film in a vacuum chamber, where it alloys directly with the polyester. VML-BO3 films are available in 12-in.-wide rolls, and 14- and 24-in. rolls will be introduced at the end of the summer. They cost roughly $3/sq ft.
