A new metallocene PP copolymer for extrusion blow and injection-blow molding is said to combine the clarity and gloss of PET. This “first-of-its-kind” resin, Metocene RM2231, from Lyondell Basell of the Netherlands (U.S. office in Wilmington, Del.) is aimed at cosmetics packaging. A 1-mm injection molded plaque shows only 4% haze, vs. 6% to 10% for previous high-clarity PPs. Extrusion blown bottles of the new grade are said to be replacing injection-blow molded PET at lower weight and cost. Pigmented Metocene RM2231 reportedly offers better surface finish than standard PP. The resin is made in Europe but available globally. (800) 955-3223 • polymers.lyondellbasell.com

In failure analysis, there is a tendency to gravitate to a few common test protocols. But this approach can result in a mismatch of techniques to the problem.
