A new silicone surfactant is designed for flame-retardant PUR slabstock foam for furniture, bedding, and auto upholstery. It reportedly can help reduce the amount of flame retardant required to pass small-scale tests like Cal 117 and MVSS-302. Niax L-650 from GE Silicones, Waterford, N.Y., reportedly allows for a 10% to 30% reduction in FR use relative to earlier Niax grades. Moreover, L-650 can be used both in conventional slabstock and in those that use CO2 as an auxiliary blowing agent.
