Surfactants for All PUR Foams

A new line of 35 silicone surfactants is aimed at all types of PUR foams, including slabstock, rigid, molded, and microcellular foams.

A new line of 35 silicone surfactants is aimed at all types of PUR foams, including slabstock, rigid, molded, and microcellular foams. Available from Byk-Chemie U.S.A., Inc., Wallingford, Conn., the new Silbyk line includes 13 products for flexible slabstock. Four are for standard polyether foams, including Silbyk 9001, a “universal,” high-activity stabilizer that can be used for foams blown with liquid CO2. Three products for high-resilience foams include Silbyk-9700, which provides fine cell structure in SAN and PHD systems. Six products for polyester foams include Silbyk-9120, which reportedly provides very fine and uniform cells, low fogging, and low VOCs in semi-rigid foams.


Another 12 products are for rigid  laminated boards, spray foam, slabstock, appliance and pipe insulation, metal-faced sandwich panels, integral-skin, and thermo-moldable foams. Silbyk-TP 3799 is optimized for HCFC, HFC, and water-blown slabstock, laminated boards, and sprayed foam. Silbyk-TP 3805 boasts a fine, closed-cell structure in hydrocarbon-blown appliance foam, slabstock, and metal-faced panels.


Four products for molded foam include medium-activity Silbyk-9020 for hot-molded foam. It is said to provide open cells and prevent voids. The other three are for cold-molded foams. One is Silbyk-TP 9400, said to give good flow and smooth skins in furniture systems.


For microcellular foams, Silbyk-TP 3796 is designed for polyester shoe soles. It reportedly provides fine cell structure, a compatibilizing effect, and low freezing point.
