A special lab for customer trials at Extrusion Dies Industries LLC in Chippewa Falls, Wis., is equipped with EDI’s latest layer-multiplying feedblocks for making microlayer films with dozens or even hundreds of layers. EDI’s new 20,000-sq-ft R&D center has a three-extruder lab line. EDI’s latest microlayer feedblock is a 4-multiplier stack, based on technology licensed from Dow Chemical Co. The initial three-layer structure is sliced into four parallel strips, which are stacked and flattened four times, yielding 768 microlayers. EDI is testing microlayer structures for enhanced barrier and stretch properties. Preliminary trials with 48-layer LDPE/LLDPE stretch film show up to 34% greater MD stretch and up to 45% more TD stretch than a three-layer LL/LD/LL structure.
