First-of-its-kind tooling technology from GN Thermoforming Equipment, Chester, N.S., provides a cost-effective way to form above and below the sheet line on GN’s contact-heat thermoformers. The system is especially suited to reverse-lip trays for heat-seal and snap-fit applications. Previously, reverse lip trays could be produced only on radiant-heat machines, which are larger, more complex, and more expensive than contact-heat types. The tooling costs about $35,000 and can be retrofitted to existing GN machines.

The tooling system includes a custom cut plate with recessed pockets that accommodate the protruding, raised flange section of the mold cavity. This results in a lower cut plane, permitting production of a raised flange. Also special is an alignment system that keeps the cut plate positioned with the tool. A tool-specific preheater helps facilitate more even heating and consistent forming.

The reverse-lip tooling system also permits common-edge cutting, which saves scrap by reducing or eliminating the amount of web between cavities. The system, which runs 15 cycles/min, is primarily targeted at PET trays.
