New polyolefin-starch masterbatch blends for film and injection molding boast a substantial reduction in “carbon footprint” over resins such as PE, PP, biodegradable polyester, or PLA. Developed by Montreal-based Cerestech, Inc, a technology development and licensing spin-off from the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, the Cereloy thermoplastic-starch (TPS) blends are now available from the first Cerestech licensee, Innovative Compounding Solutions LLC, Pittsburg, Kan., a newly-established compounder of biobased resins. Cerestech’s founder and chief scientific officer, Dr. Basil Favis, says the production of thermoplastic starch (TPS) using new, patented technology emits up to 90% less greenhouse gas than production of polyethylene and also saves significant amounts of fossil fuels compared with other plastics. Cereloy blends utilize starches derived from corn, wheat, tapioca, and potato and are said to allow for seamless substitution of traditional plastics in films, bags, and injection molded products. According to Cerestech, products made in partnerships with leading film and injection molding companies have incorporated up to 30% TPS while maintaining or exceeding mechanical properties of equivalent products made from PE, PP, and compostable resins. Cereloy Eco and Bio series masterbatches currently include three blown-film grades and two injection molding grades. Eco LL is a 50/50 TPS/LLDPE masterbatch for blown film. This grade has been used in one of the first commercial products produced with Cereloy: a new can liner being launched by film converter Pitt Plastics, Inc., Pittsburg, Kan. Eco LD is a 50/50 TPS/LDPE masterbatch for blown film. Bio FB is a 100% biodegradable blown-film grade made from TPS and a compostable (ASTM 6400-compliant) resin. Eco HD is a 50/50 TPS/HDPE masterbatch for injection molding. Eco PP is a series of 50/50 TPS/PP masterbatches. These Cereloy grades are priced comparable to, or even a bit lower than, straight PE and PP, according to Joe Piccini, director of R&D at Innovative Compounding. Besides buying blended pellets from a licensee like Innovative Compounding, processors can also purchase a license from Cerestech to make blends for their own use or sale.
