Three new engineering resins from GE Plastics, Pittsfi eld, Mass., are designed to provide reduced weight, enhanced fl ame resistance, and lower cost in aircraft interiors. The fi rst, Ultem polyetherimide 9085 is claimed to offer better fl ow and ductility than the previous Ultem 9075. It can reduce part weight by 5% to 15% via thinner walls while maintaining strength and stiffness. Ultem 9085 is inherently fl ame-retardant, offering full fl ame/smoke/toxicity (FST) compliance including OSU heat release of less than 55/55. It fl ows three times better than Ultem 9075 and is lighter in color. Applications include decompression grilles, window reveals, and personal-service units. The second new entry, Lexan PC FST9705, is a new polycarbonate copolymer with OSU 55/55 heat-release performance. Due to its inherently light base color, Lexan FST9705 produces bright whites with an L value up to 94 in CIE lab color space. Molded-in color helps reduce the approximately 5 kg of paint used in airplane cabins today, according to GE. The new material has the highest ductility of any OSU-compliant material in the GE portfolio. This results in lightweight thin-wall parts that contribute to fuel savings. Lower processing temperatures allow molders to avoid oil-heated tooling. Lexan FST9705 can be injection molded or thermoformed into stow-bin threshold trim, personal-service units, window reveals and bezels, and magazine racks. Lastly, low-smoke Noryl LS6010 boasts a specifi c gravity of 1.1, which reportedly makes it one of the lightest thermoplastics in the aerospace industry. GE claims it can provide 20% weight savings versus competitive resins. The material's durability and and nonhalogenated fl ame resistance make it suitable for uses such as rub strips and seat-track covers where low smoke is mandated.
