Two new series of mold components for undercut parts were introduced at the fi rst PDx/Amerimold show this spring in Cincinnati, sponsored by Moldmaking Technology and Time Compression magazines. One new product is the Lifter
Blades from Progressive Components, Wauconda, Ill. Described as a new method of releasing undercuts, the compact blades are designed to be used where other methods can’t fit (starting at 1.8-mm wide). They provide parallel lift and a
positional hold of the part prior to release. They offer either an “up-and-over” action or one that “arcs away” as the part is ejected. They are also removable from the parting line.
Another introduction at the show was the Dovetail collapsible core (DT Core) from Roehr Tool Corp., Hudson, Mass., a subsidiary of Progressive Components. It
requires only mold opening and closing action to operate, with no need for special core-pull circuits or even the common ejector-plate sequence, in most cases. The result is simpler mold design, less maintenance, and savings in cycle time. DT Cores have customizable collapse angles for gradual release from undercuts and ability to release deeper or flatter undercuts for reliable fit on snap beads. They are also said to allow thinner wall sections. In combination with Roehr’s new quick-lock system, the DT Core can be removed quickly while the mold is in the machine.
