A new touchscreen control said to set new standards for speed, precision, and ease of use comes from Boy Machines Inc., Exton, Pa. Its PC-based Procan Alpha control, which will replace the 32-bit Procan CT, has three new, patented components for higher performance. The 15-in. touchscreen display works entirely without a physical keyboard (a virtual key panel is displayed on the monitor). A new configuration page allows operators to freely configure and set values, and a "notepad" function lets users write on the touchscreen or store text or images. A separate hardware module handles processing of analog signals and frees the PC from all time-critical tasks, which speeds response, Boy says. The system also features an Iterative Learning Controller program, which helps reduce start-up and set-up times and "learns" to control process deviations in the course of a run.
