Momentive Performance Materials, Albany, N.Y., has introduced highly transparent liquid silicone rubber (LSR) for optical applications like automotive LED lenses. The LSR 7000 series reportedly features light transparency up to 98%, high heat resistance, and excellent physical stability. The new materials also are characterized by low mixing viscosity, resulting in faster dosing and reduced injection pressure and cycle time. They reportedly permit easier molding of complex geometries and undercuts than competing thermoplastics like PC or acrylic. Hardness ranges from 60 to 80 Shore A, though an ultra-soft version is also available. Germany’s Eschenbach Optik GmbH is the first to use LSR 7070 in high-power automotive LEDs.
