A special metering section, originally developed by B&P Process Equipment in Saginaw, Mich., for corotating twin-screw compounding, is being used for the fi rst time for direct extrusion of wood-composite profi les. The barrel section was introduced by Cincinnati Milacron, Batavia, Ohio, at the Wood Plastics Composites 2007 conference in Seattle last month. It is featured on Milacron's TE Series corotating twin-screw extruders for WPCs, developed with and built for Milacron by B&P. The low-temperature, high-pressure metering section has 2.5:1 L/D. The barrel makes an internal transition from a twin-screw fi gure-eight bore into two single bores of slightly smaller diameter. The intermeshing twin screws in the discharge section also morph into two slightly smaller single screws. This creates two separate single-screw chambers, which build high pressure at low temperature before the die, eliminating the need for a separate gear pump or single-screw discharge extruder.
