Two new LDPE resins for injection and blow molded packaging have been introduced globally by LyondellBasell Industries, Wilmington, Del. First, Purell PE 3420F is aimed at blow-fill-seal (BFS) pharmaceutical packages. It has 0.933 g/cc density and 0.90 MI. It’s big advantage is its unusually high melting point (119 C), which greatly reduces required sterilization time, according to company. Whereas standard LDPEs for BFS may need sterilization at 130 to 195 min, the new Purell resin reportedly cuts that to 30 to 50 min.
Second, LyondellBasell’s new Lupolen 1800U resin (0.916 g/cc) offers very high melt flow and a combination of toughness (85% elongation at break), softness (41 Shore D hardness, 26,100 psi tensile modulus), and dimensional stability for use in flexible, thin-wall container lids. Other potential uses include housewares, caps, closures, and as a masterbatch carrier or viscosity modifier.
