A pair of specialty modifiers for PP fibers and nonwovens are available from Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Tarrytown, N.Y. Irgasurf HL 560 is a hydrophilic additive that gives PP fibers a long-lasting wettable effect. It makes PP nonwovens absorb up to eight times their weight of water. It also adds antistatic properties, reduces friction, and increases the softness and comfort of diapers, adult incontinence pads, and feminine care products.
Irgatec CR 76 is a non-peroxide modifier that provides controlled degradation of a low-MFR PP into a high-flow resin with narrow molecular-weight distribution. It allows a spunbond grade of 20 to 35 MFR or recycled fiber scrap to be used in melt-blown applications, which require higher flow. Narrow MWD provides higher tensile strength and elongation. CR-76 is a hindered hydroxylamine ester in a polymer concentrate. It can also be used to crosslink PE or graft polyolefins via reactive extrusion.
