A new two-stage vacuum hopper is said to remove at least 60% of the moisture and/or volatiles in undried resin before it enters the injection barrel. The Vacmeltor system was presented last month at the Platex show in Osaka, Japan, by Meiki Co. Ltd. (represented here by Meiki America Corp., Elk Grove Village, Ill.). The Vacmeltor is positioned between a material loader and the feed throat on Meiki's Mu series allelectric injection machines. The system has pneumatically actuated shutoff slides between the loader and the fi rst stage of the Vacmeltor, between the fi rst and second stages of the system, and between the second stage and feed throat of the machine. It requires the back of the screw and barrel to be sealed. A fl oor-mounted vacuum system generates 14.35psi vacuum, or only 1% of standard atmospheric pressure.
