WEB EXCLUSIVE: PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers, McHenry, Ill., has worked with Genesis Plastics Welding, Indianapolis, to adapt the latter firm’s new ecoGenesis RF welding technology for PolyOne’s Versaflex TPEs. Previously, RF welding was restricted to materials with high dielectric loss, such as flexible PVC and TPU. Nonpolar materials like polyolefins and some TPEs could only be heat-sealed, limiting weld configurations to straight lines. But ecoGenesis was developed to extend RF welding to unmodified PP and PE and permit a wide range of 2D weld configurations. Through fine-tuning the process, ecoGenesis can now be applied to PolyOne’s Versaflex TPE alloys, at least some of which appear to have olefinic content. RF-welded, plasticizer-free Versaflex TPEs can be used for medical infusion kits, blood bags, drainage bags, and urinary bags. Genesis offers an inexpensive modification for standard RF welding hardware, along with a know-how license. It is also a contract manufacturer.
