Davis-Standard LLC Converting Systems in Fulton, N.Y., redesigned its PAC 50 surface winders to improve control of roll hardness in winding tacky films. New hydraulic valves and electronics provide high-speed digital control of the lay-on force against the surface-winding drum. That permits winding larger rolls up to 60-in. diam. without crushing the core. The first PAC 50 winder with the new controls was built two years ago to wind sticky film with an EVA surface layer. The upgrade has since become standard on all PAC winders. In addition, a new mechanical device can bring an empty core up to winding speed before cutover for smoother start-up in winding thin webs.
