WEB EXCLUSIVE. Last month, Teknor Apex Co.’s Vinyl Div., Pawtucket, R.I., ceased production of lead-stabilized PVC compounds, reportedly the first move of this kind in the U.S. wire and cable industry. Teknor notified customers that it will supply only non-lead stabilized (NLS) PVC compounds after July 31. The changeover also includes precolored compounds, for which sister business Teknor Color Co. has developed color concentrates that comply with the EU’s Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) regulations, including restrictions against use of lead. Industry manager Mike Patel says, “New non-lead stabilizer additives plus advanced compounding technology has enabled us to manufacture NLS compounds whose performance and cost are comparable to lead-stabilized materials.” (401) 725-8000 * www.teknorapex.com
