Eccosphere line of hollow composite macrospheres in median diameters of 0.5 and 2 in. range in average densities from 0.20-0.40 g/cc. They can provide weight reduction, thermal and acoustic insulation, and control of mechanical properties. Typical applications include syntactic buoyancy and insulation, evaporation control, and tooling.
Exhibitors at this year’s show introduced an assortment of new machines and upgraded models with designs incorporating the latest in mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic technologies.
The focus this year at the international JEC Composites Show in Paris was not so much on brand-new processes as on adapting existing processes and materials for mass production, especially of large parts with critical structural demands. Attracting the most attention was wind energy, where composite material usage is growing more than 17%/yr, according to Gurit (formerly SP Systems), a Swiss-based global prepreg supplier with U.S. operations.
The first quarter of 2005 will see the first commercial production of a dramatically new family of resins that offer the processing advantages of liquid thermosets plus the properties and recyclability of engineering thermoplastics.
