Systems integration and compact size will be central themes of welding exhibits at NPE, where a wide range of new products will be displayed.
A breakthrough in laser welding of three-dimensional parts that eliminates traditional clamping systems was among several innovations in welding and joining highlighted at two recent shows—last month’s Plastics USA in Chicago and this month’s K 2004 in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Laser welding is gaining acceptance as a specialized method for joining plastic parts that are sensitive (e.g., contain circuit boards), involve complex geometries, or have strict cleanliness requirements (medical devices). So far, most of this activity has taken place in Europe.
The spotlight in plastics welding and assembly at NPE 2003 was focused on laser, infrared, and ultrasonic equipment.
New approaches to joining plastic parts will attract attention at this NPE, where an array of new models of many types will be at work and several new suppliers will be on hand.
Electric servo-drive technology, new controls, larger-part capability, and ability to handle lower viscosity resins were some of the themes echoed in the new group of welding, bonding, and joining devices exhibited last month at NPE 2000 in Chicago. Also shown were two new approaches to laser welding, a new adhesive that cures in UV or visible light, and new tape adhesives for gasketing or hard-to-bond applications. Two new mechanical devices, including an automated insert-setting device for plastics, were also shown.
