Milliken & Company, Spartanburg, South Carolina, has unveiled its plans for a major capacity expansion of its Millad NX 8000 clarifying agent for PP at its Blacksburg, South Carolina facility. Scheduled for completion in 2015, the expansion will double production and add an additional redundant manufacturing line to ensure ample global supply of the product.

The fast adoption of the Millad NX 8000 technology, a third-generation sorbitol acetal clarifier launched in 2008, has been driven by the material’s cleaner, fresher look and inherent sustainability benefits versus competitive products, according to the company. It set a new standard for PP clarity from the start, as it produces 50% less haze at any part thickness than its predecessor. Its improved solubility enables clarified PP to be processed at cooler temperatures, taking advantage of higher melt-flow resins.

Milliken customers that employ the technology have reported energy savings of up to 13%, cycle times accelerated up to 18%, and carbon emissions reduced by as much as 13%. The energy saving have been validated by UL Environment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Underwriters Laboratories and an independent environmental claims validation company.
