Containing 25% recycled PS, new Evoc packaging is being used in most of the line of fresh products from poultry cooperative Exceldor.

What appears to be the first PS foam food tray in North America to contain recycled material recently made its commercial debut in Canadian grocery stores. Produced by Cascades, Inc., Kingsley Falls, QC, Canada’s largest collector and processor of recycled materials with specialties in food, commercial and industrial packaging, the new Evoc packaging contains 25% recycled PS. Evoc trays are currently being used in most of the line of fresh products from Exceldor, a major poultry cooperative in Quebec.

Designed for packaging meats, poultry, fish and seafood, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables, the product has achieved a UL Environment claim validation for its recycle content and the material is approved by both the FDA and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Noting that the new trays are just as efficient, Cascades Specialty Products Group’s president and COO Luck Langevin says, “By incorporating 25% of recycled PS into our products, we have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 20% compared with our traditional PS foam trays.” He also notes that for Exceldor, the packaging change will reduce that company’s annual greenhouse gas emissions by close to 80,000 lbs, or the equivalent of the yearly emissions produced by 15 compact cars.
